4 Restorative Dentistry Procedures

Restorative dentistry is the practice of restoring the teeth in order to improve oral health. Dentists use a variety of restorative dentistry procedures that help to correct problems in the oral cavity and prevent further damage and disease to the teeth. Here are four of those restorative dentistry procedures that dentists use.

1. Dental Fillings

One of the most common causes of tooth decay is eating too many sugar-laden foods and beverages. This is especially true for those who don't brush and floss on a regular basis. When sugar gets stuck to the tooth, it forms a sticky film called plaque, which destroys the tooth's enamel and leads to cavities. In order to restore a tooth that has a cavity, a dentist has to drill out the decay and put in a dental filling.

2. Root Canals

If a person has a cavity or cracked tooth, it's possible for bacteria to enter the pulp, or the innermost part of the tooth. In some cases, the bacteria reaches the root of the tooth, which can result in an infection. When this type of infection occurs, a dentist will need to do a restorative dentistry procedure called a root canal. During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp from the tooth. After the dentist cleans the inside of the tooth, they seal the space with a hard substance called gutta-percha.

3. Dental Crowns

Dental crowns play an important role in restorative dentistry. Any time a tooth is cracked or damaged in any way, a dentist can place a dental crown on the tooth, which restores the tooth to its original size and shape. The dentist customizes the crown to fit perfectly over the surface of the tooth. Dental crowns are made from a variety of materials, which include porcelain, gold, and zirconium. Porcelain fused to metal is another option for dental crowns. Besides restoring shape and size, a dental crown also helps to prevent the tooth from further damage.

4. Dentures

When a person has several missing teeth, it can greatly affect their ability to talk and chew food. To help restore these functions, a dentist might recommend dentures. When all of the teeth are missing, the dental patient will need complete dentures. When patients only have some teeth missing, they'll need partial dentures. Both partial and complete dentures offer a variety of benefits, which include an improved smile and increased confidence. Dentures also help to support the facial muscles.
